Why we want to hire veterans

Ironworkers Local 597 is deeply committed to enrolling veterans into our Apprenticeship program for several key reasons. Firstly, we recognize the exceptional skills, discipline, and leadership qualities that veterans bring to the workforce. Their experience in the military has equipped them with a unique set of abilities, including teamwork, problem-solving, and a strong work ethic, which are invaluable in the ironworking trade.

Moreover, our commitment to veterans is part of our broader dedication to giving back to those who have served our country. We believe in providing opportunities for veterans to transition smoothly into civilian life and secure meaningful, well-paying careers that benefit from their skills and dedication. The Apprenticeship program offers veterans a clear path to certification in a skilled trade, combining on-the-job training with classroom instruction, ensuring they are fully equipped for success in their new careers.

Additionally, by investing in veterans, we are also investing in the quality and future of our workforce. Veterans' experiences and perspectives enhance our teams, bringing strength, resilience, and diversity to our projects. Their leadership and ability to perform under pressure are assets that improve our work environment and project outcomes.

In summary, Ironworkers Local 597's commitment to enrolling veterans into the Apprenticeship program is driven by a recognition of the valuable skills veterans bring, a desire to support their transition into civilian careers, and a commitment to enhancing the quality and diversity of our workforce. This initiative not only honors the service of our veterans but also strengthens our community and the ironworking industry as a whole.

What we currently do for veterans at our company

Ironworkers is taking significant steps to support veterans within the organization, recognizing their valuable contributions and facilitating their transition into the civilian workforce. Key initiatives include:

Leadership by Example: With the organization's current President and several officers being veterans themselves, Ironworkers sets a powerful example of the leadership roles that veterans can achieve within the trade. This leadership presence underscores the organization's commitment to veteran integration and success.

Recruitment through Helmets to Hardhats: Ironworkers actively recruits veterans through the Helmets to Hardhats program, which is designed to connect National Guard, Reserve, retired, and transitioning active-duty military members with skilled training and quality career opportunities in the construction industry. This targeted recruitment effort demonstrates a proactive approach to inviting veterans to join their ranks.

VA-Approved Apprenticeship Program: The Apprenticeship Program at Ironworkers is approved by the Veterans Affairs (VA), enabling veterans to make the most out of their GI Bill benefits. This means that veterans are eligible for GI Bill funding while participating in the Apprenticeship Program, offering them financial support as they train for a new career in ironworking. This approval not only validates the quality and structure of the Apprenticeship Program but also provides substantial support to veterans as they acquire new skills and qualifications for their post-military careers.

By focusing on leadership, targeted recruitment, and leveraging VA-approved educational benefits, Ironworkers demonstrates a comprehensive approach to supporting veterans. These efforts not only assist veterans in transitioning to civilian life but also enrich the organization with the skills, discipline, and leadership qualities that veterans bring to the workforce.
