Background Information

The IBEW or International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers is a multi-employer organization for Power Professionals. The IBEW represents approximately 775,000 active members and retirees who work in a wide variety of fields, including utilities, construction, telecommunications, broadcasting, manufacturing, railroads, and government. The IBEW has members in both the United States and Canada and stands out among the American unions in the AFL-CIO because it is among the largest and has members in so many skilled occupations.

As union members, we bargain collectively with our employers over wages, benefits, and rights. Most of us have very limited bargaining power as one person, but as a group, we are STRONG! And with a well negotiated contract, we have legal protections we would not otherwise have. Whether your background is in Residential, Commercial, or Industrial, the IBEW has a spot for you!

Why we want to hire veterans

  1. Discipline and Work Ethic: Military service instills a strong sense of discipline and work ethic in individuals. Veterans are accustomed to adhering to strict schedules, following protocols, and completing tasks with precision and dedication. This discipline translates seamlessly into the workplace, ensuring reliability and commitment to apprenticeship responsibilities.
  2. Leadership Skills: Veterans often have experience in leadership roles within the military, where they are entrusted with significant responsibilities and decision-making authority. This leadership experience equips them with invaluable skills such as effective communication, problem-solving, and the ability to motivate and inspire others, making them valuable assets in any apprenticeship program.
  3. Adaptability and Resilience: Military service exposes individuals to diverse and challenging environments, requiring them to adapt quickly to new situations and persevere in the face of adversity. Veterans demonstrate remarkable resilience, resourcefulness, and the ability to thrive under pressure, qualities that are highly sought after in apprentices who must navigate various learning curves and overcome obstacles in their professional development.
  4. Teamwork and Collaboration: Collaboration is essential in military operations, where individuals must work seamlessly as part of a cohesive team to achieve common objectives. Veterans are adept at collaborating with colleagues, respecting diverse perspectives, and contributing their skills and expertise to collective goals. In an apprenticeship setting, their ability to collaborate effectively enhances productivity and fosters a positive work environment.
  5. Technical Skills and Training: Depending on their military occupational specialty, veterans often possess specialized technical skills and training that are directly applicable to apprenticeship roles in fields such as engineering, logistics, healthcare, information technology, and more. Their hands-on experience with advanced technologies and equipment can accelerate their learning curve and add immediate value to the apprenticeship program.
  6. Commitment to Excellence: Military veterans are accustomed to striving for excellence in everything they do, as their service demands nothing less than the highest standards of performance. They approach their work with a commitment to quality, attention to detail, and a drive to continuously improve and excel, qualities that align closely with the objectives of an apprenticeship program focused on skill development and professional growth.
