Background Information

The Sioux City Joint Apprenticeship & Training Committee (JATC) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to developing a highly skilled electrical workforce in northwest Iowa and the surrounding region. Through a partnership between the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) Local 231 and the National Electrical Contractors Association (NECA), the JATC provides industry-leading education and training for electrical apprentices and journeymen.

Why we want to hire veterans

The Sioux City JATC actively encourages veterans to apply because the skills developed through military service align closely with the demands of the electrical trade. Veterans bring a strong work ethic, discipline, and reliability—qualities that are essential in a structured apprenticeship and on job sites where safety and precision are critical. Their training also emphasizes attention to detail and adherence to procedures, which directly supports the safe, code-compliant work required in the electrical industry.

In addition, many veterans have hands-on experience with technical systems, tools, and equipment, giving them a solid foundation for learning the trade. Their ability to work as part of a team, communicate effectively, and take initiative makes them well-suited for the collaborative nature of electrical work. Veterans are also accustomed to learning in structured environments and adapting quickly to new challenges, which helps them succeed throughout the apprenticeship program.

By welcoming veterans into the program, the JATC not only strengthens the workforce with highly capable individuals but also supports their transition into civilian careers. The apprenticeship offers a clear path to a stable, well-paying profession where veterans can build on their existing skills and develop a long-term career in the electrical industry

What we currently do for veterans at our company

The Sioux City JATC is committed to supporting veterans both inside and outside of the organization by providing a direct pathway into the electrical trade. Apprenticeship programs offer a structured, team-oriented training environment that closely mirrors military experience, making the transition into civilian careers more seamless. Veterans benefit from hands-on training, steady employment, and a clear advancement path, while also bringing valuable skills such as discipline, safety awareness, and leadership to the workforce.

One of the most important benefits available to veterans is the ability to use their GI Bill while enrolled in a registered apprenticeship. Eligible veterans can receive a monthly housing allowance in addition to their wages, helping bridge the gap while they are learning the trade. Many also qualify for financial assistance for books and supplies, and in some cases, retroactive benefits may be available after enrolling in the program.

By combining paid on-the-job training with GI Bill benefits, the JATC provides veterans with a debt-free career pathway into a high-demand industry. This model allows veterans to earn a paycheck from day one while building long-term skills, supporting their transition into stable, well-paying careers in the electrical industry
