Duties Description:
The mortarman is responsible for the tactical employment of the 60mm light mortar and the 81mm medium mortar. Mortarmen provide indirect fire in support of the rifle and LAR squads/platoons/companies and the infantry and LAR battalions. They are located in the weapons platoons of the rifle and LAR companies and the weapons company of the infantry battalion. Noncommissioned officers are assigned as mortar gunners, forward observers, fire direction plotters, and squad and section leaders. Morgans primary role was mortar gunner, operating the sight unit on the mortar. This role requires meticulous attention to detail as the slightest error in the sight unit poses a high risk to both the operators as well as the element receiving support from said mortar.

Morgan also spent his last year 2 years as a combat instructor, teaching newly commissioned Marine Corps officers infantry tactics. Primarily the operation and employment of 60mm light mortars.
