Work Experience:
- Hello, my name is Gary and I am currently serving as a Petty Officer Second Class Utilitiesman in the world’s finest Navy. I have 7 years experience in construction related trades. I will remain here until the end of my contract in February of 2025. I am separating from the Navy because my family continues to grow, and my wife and I are looking for a little more consistency in our lives.
- My intentions upon moving back home to the Pan Handle of Idaho, are to find a career that suits me and also relates to the experience I obtained from my military career. Being a Utilitiesman has taught me a lot about HVAC as well as plumbing and a plethora of other basic construction skills. To include, but not limited to; basic carpentry, rough-in electrical, masonry, earthwork/foundation, and even equipment operation. Many of the jobs we were tasked to do required us Seabees to be flexible, which is why the Seabee motto is "Can Do" & "Semper Gumby". Although I was a Utilitiesmasn, meaning my specialty was HVAC and plumbing, being deployed to some of the most remote areas of the world forced us to learn other trades and to have a basic knowledge about more than just one element of construction. A "Jack of All Trades" if you will.
- Aside from my trade experience, I also learned what means to be a leader. What it means to be a part of a team, to put the mission first. I think these skills, this mindset, are extremely useful in the civilian world. Being an Non-Commissioned Officer, I have been exposed to a lot of construction planning and estimating and have been placed in many leadership roles, in which I would have to rely on my team to execute certain tasks and elements of construction due to the fact that the task was not always necessarily my trade. Being assigned as a Project Supervisor has given me the experience I needed to learn how to lead my junior troops with confidence and trust. Being designated as a Project Crew Leader has exposed me to the fact that you can lead your team, while also maintaining a hand on the shovel. Ensuring that the job is completed on time with all quality construction points are maintained in a safe and efficient manner.
- Prior to my military service, I also worked in the automotive industry where I learned what it meant to put emphasis on the minute details. Having four years of experience in this industry most certainly gave me a good foundation to build off of, which I believe has made my military experience that much easier. The automotive industry taught me what it meant to work hard, to not cut any corners, to not take any short cuts. I apply this work ethic, to every task I find infront of me.
